Naturopathic Care in South Calgary

Meet Dr. Ali Nurani

Dr. Ali Nurani is a certified naturopathic doctor based in the southwest of Calgary. He is a passionate advocate for healthy living and is an active part of the healthcare community. His desire for helping people started when he was a teenager when he used to volunteer in hospitals growing up in Kenya. Dr Nurani began to see several deficiencies and drawbacks to the conventional healthcare system and always believed there was a better way to help people.

Strong Belief to Empower His Patients

active lifestyleOne of his strong beliefs is the importance and the fundamental need to empower people to take control over their own health while helping people make healthy life choices. He has always firmly advocated that health is a positive and active journey of complete physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Calgary, Dr Nurani went on to pursue a naturopathic medical degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. It was exactly what he was looking for as he wanted to combine both the art and science of medicine in order to transform people’s health using effective individualized holistic treatments, treating
people and not symptoms.

Delivers a Top-Down Holistic Approach to Healing

After witnessing firsthand the power of naturopathic medicine in his personal and professional life, Dr Nurani is proud to be practicing naturopathic medicine as it is the perfect vehicle that allows him to deliver a top-down holistic approach to healing and optimum health. Naturopathy has allowed him to fulfill his passion of helping others get healthy.

Treatments target a number of digestive, metabolic, endocrine, immune, circulatory, musculoskeletal, urinary, respiratory and nervous concerns. Dr. Nurani will typically spend hours trying to figure out the root cause to come up with a comprehensive treatment plan to ensure the best type of approach for each patient. He also can address food sensitivities, allergies, and diet.

Certified in Prolotherapy

Dr. Nurani is also certified in prolotherapy, which addresses soft tissue injuries. It’s like a weld or glue that can go into small tears. Within our practice, we see many patients with small tears in the rotator cuff of the shoulder. Dr. Byrne uses ultrasound, and muscle stim, and Dr. Nurani uses prolotherapy. The combined approach has reduced the recovery time down to probably a third or a half when introducing the prolotherapy as opposed to not.

Help for Calcific Adhesions

Prolotherapy can effectively break up calcific adhesions, almost dissolving them.
Then by using the ultrasound, we can clear the small and softer calcific adhesions as opposed to the rock-solid ones. So chiropractic and prolotherapy work well together.

The combine approach of chiropractic and prolotherapy greatly speed up the recovery time of mid-ground rotator cuff injuries.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy takes a traditional holistic approach to health that’s based on natural and preventative care. Naturopathic medicine melds many methodologies. These include the following:

  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Chiropractic adjustment
  • Homeopathy and herbal remedies
  • Good nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Relaxation techniques

A fundamental principle of naturopathic medicine is to “do no harm,” complementing any necessary therapy.

What kind of health conditions do naturopathic doctors address?

Naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose and address an array of acute and chronic conditions, just like your regular general practitioner. However, naturopathic doctors recognize that every person is different, and so are the symptoms of disease. That’s why naturopathic physicians like Dr. Nurani treat each person with an individualized plan that is custom-tailored to meet the individual’s needs.

What happens at my first visit?

After the initial naturopathic visit, we will schedule you for a thorough physical examination within a week or two. That includes the following:

    • Complete physical examination (including a breast exam for women)

  • Body fat analysis

  • Traditional Medicine Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis

Just as no two individuals are exactly alike, no two cases are alike. Dr. Nurani works with the information you provide him, the physical examination, and the lab testing to devise the best possible natural approach for you. He does so using the principles of naturopathic medicine, which will be discussed at the care plan visit, following the second visit.
